Project Title: Comparing the Portrayals and Medicalisation of Autism in Hong Kong Newspapers with the Perceptions of Individuals with Autism: A Discourse Analytic Study

[Appointment Period: around 4 months]

The appointee will participate in projects related to discourse studies of news portrayals of autism and the self-perception of autistic individuals in Hong Kong. He/She will be involved in a wide range of research activities, such as reviewing literature, collecting and analyzing data, preparing research reports, and undertaking project-related administrative work, including arranging and conducting interviews with autistic individuals. He/she will also need to perform other duties as assigned. The appointment will be for a period of around 4 months, with the possibility of renewal subject to mutual agreement.

Applicants for Research Assistant II should have at least Level 2 or equivalent or above in five subjects including Chinese Language, English Language and Mathematics in HKDSE; or Grade E (Level 2) or above in five subjects including Chinese, English (Syllabus B) and Mathematics in HKCEE or equivalent. Applicants with a Bachelor’s Degree or above in Linguistics/English Studies, Psychology, Sociology, Social Work or a related discipline, with relevant post-qualification full-time working experience or an approved qualification or equivalent standard are preferred. Applicants should have a good command of spoken and written English and Cantonese and being familiar with discourse analysis and narrative analysis is desirable. Preference will be given to those with extensive experience in conducting interviews with autistic individuals.
