Role Description

The Principal Quantity Surveyor is responsible for leading cost management and commercial control across major construction and infrastructure projects. This role ensures that financial and contractual performance is effectively managed throughout the project lifecycle, from early-stage estimates and procurement through to final account settlement.

The position provides strategic oversight of cost planning, value engineering, contract administration, and risk management. It involves reviewing project budgets, monitoring expenditure, and ensuring that all commercial activities align with project objectives and organizational standards. The Principal Quantity Surveyor also plays a key role in advising on procurement strategies, tender evaluations, and contract negotiations to secure value and mitigate financial risk.

In addition, this role leads and supports project teams in maintaining accurate cost reporting and forecasting. It ensures compliance with contractual obligations and industry standards while identifying opportunities to improve efficiency, reduce costs, and enhance overall project value. The position requires close collaboration with clients, consultants, contractors, and internal stakeholders to ensure transparent and effective commercial decision-making.

The Principal Quantity Surveyor also contributes to mentoring and guiding junior team members, promoting best practices in cost management and professional development within the team.

Qualifications

Strong expertise in quantity surveying, cost management, and commercial project controls
In-depth knowledge of construction contracts, procurement methods, and claims management
Excellent analytical and financial forecasting skills with strong attention to detail
Proven ability to manage large-scale budgets and complex cost structures
Strong negotiation and stakeholder management skills across multidisciplinary teams
High proficiency in cost estimation, reporting tools, and standard industry software
Solid understanding of risk management and value engineering principles
Strong leadership capability with experience guiding and developing team members
Excellent communication skills for client-facing and internal coordination
Ability to work under pressure while maintaining accuracy and commercial integrity
